Travel Japan in Art - Ukiyoe and more -

Nowadays Arashiyama, home of the Saga Arashiyama Museum of Arts and Culture, welcomes large numbers of visitors every year; it was during the Edo period (1600-1868) that ordinary Japanese people first had the opportunity to travel for leisure. Beautiful locations in each region became famous as 'scenic spots' that everyone wanted to visit. Now Let’s stop the clock for a while and visit some of these famous scenic spots through Ukiyoe.

Songs: Teika, Bashō, and Yumeji

Songs: Teika, Bashō, and Yumeji, an exhibition introducing of the arts of Japanese poetry. The Saga Arashiyama district has a history with poetry: it is here that the storied poet and calligrapher Fujiwara no Teika (1162–1241) compiled the Ogura version of the Hyakunin Isshu, or One Hundred Poets, One Poem Each, a tour-de-force of waka verse by the most famous classical poets of early Japan.

Hyakunin Isshu History

Hyakunin Isshu is an anthology of 100 poems by 100 poets. It was collected here in Saga Arashiyama 800 years ago by Fujiwara no Teika, who carefully selected each of the short waka poems. A permanent exhibition at Saga Arashiyama Museum of Art and Culture conveys the charm, and tells the history, of Hyakunin Isshu.
